10 things to check before a long road trip

A long road trip requires more than just a full tank and a carefully curated playlist. Before you hit the road, it’s essential to make sure your vehicle is in top shape. At our NAPA AUTOPRO service center, we know that prevention is the key to peace of mind. Here are 10 essential checks to perform before you leave.

1. Engine oil level

Engine oil lubricates mechanical parts and prevents premature wear. A low level can cause serious damage. Check the oil when the engine is cold, and top it up if needed with the manufacturer’s recommended oil.

2. Coolant

An overheating engine can derail your plans. Make sure the coolant level is adequate and that the fluid is clean. If in doubt, a full fluid replacement might be necessary.

3. Brake fluid

Low levels or old fluid can reduce braking efficiency. It’s recommended to have the entire brake system checked regularly, especially before a long trip.

4. Tires: pressure and wear

Properly inflated tires provide better grip, safer driving, and optimized fuel efficiency. Have a professional check the tread depth and inspect the condition of the spare tire, if your vehicle has one.

5. Lights and signals

Whether day or night, seeing and being seen is crucial. Test all your lights: headlights, high beams, brake lights, turn signals, fog lights, and reverse lights.

6. Wiper blades and windshield washer fluid

Worn wipers can seriously impact your visibility in the rain. Replace them if they leave streaks or make unusual noises. Also, fill the washer fluid reservoir with a season-appropriate product.

7. Battery

A weak battery could leave you stranded after a long stop. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested for free at our NAPA AUTOPRO service center.

8. Brakes

Do you hear squealing noises? Is the brake pedal soft or the braking response less sharp? These are signs you shouldn’t ignore. Have the pads, discs, and calipers inspected before you leave.

9. Air conditioning and ventilation

A comfortable, well-ventilated cabin makes the journey much more enjoyable. Check that your A/C is working properly, especially if you're heading out in the summer.

10. Documents and safety equipment

Before heading out, make sure you have:

  • Your driver’s license
  • Your vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • A reflective safety vest
  • A warning triangle
  • A first aid kit
  • A flashlight and jumper cables (recommended)
